Why America? The Globalization of Civil War

The magnitude of the September 11 assaults on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon was unprecedented in the history of terrorism. The method of attack represented a novel combination of the familiar tactics of aircraft hijackings, which began in 1968, and suicide bombings, which developed in the 1980s. The four simultaneous hijackings required much more complicated and long-term planning and organization than had previous terrorist actions.
