The Distribution of Video and Computer Graphics on Networks

This paper has been prepared to provide background information on how electronic images are transported over networks, with particular emphasis on the considerations that led to the development of Electrosonic’s VN-MATRIX™ and VN-GLIMPSE™ products. To understand these products it is necessary to have a basic understanding of both how image compression works, and how computer networks behave. Once the principles of sending images over IP (Internetwork Protocol) are understood, it becomes possible to identify those circumstances where “standard” methods (such as the use of MPEG compression) are not optimal. The aim of this paper is to identify clearly the role of the Electrosonic network products, and their relationship to other products and techniques that may be encountered in the field. [via]
