Steps Towards a Fully Preemptable Linux Kernel
In recent years desktop computers with standard operating systems are used more and more often for soft-real-time tasks, e.g. replaying audio- and video-streams. On non-preemptable operating systems other tasks running in parallel can cause latencies that delay the execution of the soft-real-time task. This paper concentrates on solutions that do not change or extend the system call interface the standard Linux kernel offers to libraries and applications. Therefore hard realtime capable solutions like RTLinux or RTAI, that introduce their own subsystem and API, are not covered herein. [via]
