New File Format and Methods for Multichannel Sound in Broadcasting (2005)
The RF64 file format is designed to meet the requirements for multichannel sound in broadcasting and audio archiving. It is based on the Microsoft RIFF/WAVE format and Wave Format Extensible for multichannel parameters. Additions are made to the basic specification to allow for more than 4 Gigabyte file sizes when needed. A maximum of 18 surround channels, a stereo downmix channel and also bitstream signals with non-PCM coded data can be stored in the file. All existing supplements and chunks of the BWF and WAVE formats can be passed along with the new format. Early applications have been developed. This paper describes a work in progress among European broadcasters and manufacturers. The EBU project group P/AGA and AES SC-02-08 are working together in parallel on the subject of defining a multichannel file format. The basic requirements for the draft file format have been discussed among Broadcasting organisations and software manufacturers monitoring early implementations of multichannel 5.1 audio services for TV and radio. The format can be used in the entire programme chain from capturing to editing and play out and for short or long term archiving of multichannel files. [via]
