LSC White Paper on Detector Research and Development
This document presents a recommended program of research and development to support improvements to the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-wave Observatory (LIGO). The program is the result of research undertaken by the technical development groups of the LIGO Scientific Collaboration (LSC), and subsequent discussion by the LSC at large. A companion document presenting the LSC recommended program in detector characterization and data analysis is also available. The recommended program is tightly focused around a reference design for LIGO II, which is planned to be a quantum-limited interferometer with a very significant increase in sensitivity over LIGO I. A smaller but vital continuing research plan for future detector development is also laid out. [via]
